Best Instant Pot 2026: Duo Plus, Duo, or Pro 8 Quart?

Instant Pot stopped being a single product years ago – there are now eight different models in the lineup, half of them are confusingly named, and the differences matter more than the box suggests. After owning three of them and borrowing two more from friends, here are the three you should actually consider and the ones to skip.

Quick picks

  • Best overall: Instant Pot Duo Plus 6 Quart. The sweet spot. Enough features without the unreliable upgrades of the Ultra and Max.
  • Best budget: Instant Pot Duo 6 Quart. The classic. Still the best-selling model for good reason.
  • Best for large families: Instant Pot Pro 8 Quart. Bigger pot, quieter steam release, better sealing ring.

The Instant Pot model that hits the sweet spot. Every feature you’ll actually use, none of the ones you won’t.

The Duo Plus is the Instant Pot I recommend by default. It has the yogurt function (which matters if you actually want to make yogurt), the sterilize mode (genuinely useful for baby bottles or canning jars), and a better display than the basic Duo. Most importantly, it skips the “Ultra” and “Max” features that add complexity and, in my experience, failure points. This is the model that won’t show up in r/Instantpot as “it stopped sealing after 18 months.”

2. Instant Pot Duo 6 Quart – Best budget

Routinely $59
The Instant Pot that made Instant Pot a household word. Under $100 and still the value champion.

The original Duo is the most-owned Instant Pot model in the world, and it’s still the value pick. It does everything you actually need, it’s been tested by millions of people, and replacement parts (sealing rings, steam valves) are easy to find. If you don’t need the yogurt or sterilize modes, save the money and get the Duo.

3. Instant Pot Pro 8 Quart – Best for large families

BEST FOR FAMILIES

Instant Pot Pro 8 Quart 10-in-1

20,400 ratings
  • 8-quart capacity fits a 7-lb roast
  • Quiet steam release redirects steam down and back
  • Two sealing rings – one for sweet, one for savory
  • Ergonomic handles and heat-resistant plate
  • Cooking progress bar on the display
$169
Often $119 on sale
The Instant Pot to buy if you have kids or cook big batches. The quiet steam release alone justifies the premium.

The Pro 8 Quart is what you buy if you actually cook for four or more people. The extra capacity lets you fit a full chicken or a big batch of chili without stacking. The quiet steam release is a legitimately new engineering feature – steam goes down and back instead of straight up, which means you can depressurize in the kitchen without scaring the dog. Two sealing rings is smart: yogurt cooked in the same ring as chili tastes like chili.

Which Instant Pots to skip

  • Ultra. Too many programs, less reliable display, and the “altitude adjustment” feature nobody uses.
  • Max. Higher pressure sounds useful but the sealing ring issues have been reported for years.
  • Duo Crisp with Air Fryer lid. Two bad appliances in one. Buy a separate air fryer.
  • Nova Plus. Discontinued. Do not buy old stock.

FAQ

6 quart or 8 quart?

6 quart for households of 1-3 people. 8 quart for 4+ people or anyone who wants to batch cook for the week. 8 quart also fits a full chicken; 6 quart fits a 4-5 pound bird max.

Do I need the yogurt function?

Only if you actually plan to make yogurt. It’s a cold hold feature that takes 8-10 hours. If you’ve never made yogurt at home, you can skip it and save money on the basic Duo.

Which would you buy?

Duo Plus 6 Quart for most people. Duo 6 Quart if $60 matters. Pro 8 Quart if you have a family or love meal prep.
