HP Envy Inspire Printer Reviews

The HP Envy Inspire Printer 7955e ($270) is a multifunctional inkjet printer with lots of features available at a reasonable price. This full-featured all-in-one is well equipped for most office tasks, with an automatic document feeder (ADF) and a duplexer for making two-sided prints.

There is a second input tray for photo paper. This model, however, does not have fax capabilities.

The HP Envy Inspire printer is best suited for an online setup and is optimized for use on a network. To use the HP Smart software for my first scan, for example, I had to create an account with HP.

This prompted a question about how I liked the HP Smart app, as well as a request to sign up for an account.

Two ink cartridges are used in the HP Envy Inspire printer: a pigment-based black cartridge and a dye-based tri-color cartridge.

The HP Instant Ink subscription plan includes six months of free ink refills with the 7955e. You’ll want to sign up as soon as possible: During my testing, the starter color ink cartridge ran out, so be ready with extra ink. A monthly page volume of 300 to 400 pages is recommended.

Two input trays are available: a 125-sheet cassette and a 15-sheet photo paper tray that can handle 5 x 5, 4 x 6, and 5 x 7-inch sizes. The photo paper tray does not support custom sizes, but panoramic paper can be fed through the main input tray. Up to 60 sheets can be stored in the output tray. The automatic document feeder (ADF) can hold up to 35 sheets.

For stand-alone operation, the 2.7-inch color touch screen comes in handy. It responded well to my inputs and swiping through menus. It is, however, a little on the small side. The Canon Pixma TS8320 has a 4.3-inch color touch screen and is similarly priced. HP provides the previously mentioned software for controlling the printer from a PC or mobile device.

HP provides the HP Smart app, which can be used to control the printer from a computer or a mobile device. There are no media card slots or a USB direct port where a thumb drive can be plugged in.

You’ll need some room to accommodate the footprint of this network-centric printer. The HP Envy Inspire Printer 7955e is larger than many inkjets, including some models with ink tanks, measuring 18.1 x 20.5 x 19.2 inches (which tend to be bigger than those that use ink cartridges).

A duplexer, which allows for two-sided printing, tends to add volume to the chassis. In comparison, the Canon G6020 (which uses ink tanks and has a duplexer) measures only 15.9 x 14.6 x 7.7 inches, which is significantly smaller than the Inspire 7955e.

You’ll also need to give this HP some vertical clearance. Because the scanner lid’s hinges aren’t strong enough to hold the lid and ADF up, you’ll have to prop it up at 90 degrees to use both hands while placing a document on the scanner glass. Despite its size, the HP Envy is light, weighing only 17.9 pounds.

Paper sensors eliminate the need to tell the printer what type of photo paper is in the second paper tray. This can be perplexing at first. The main tray paper setting and the photo paper tray setting are both displayed on the LCD menu, though the photo paper setting is greyed out. This informs you that you are not required to do so.

This indicates that you do not need to select the paper type because it has already been detected. When you refill the main tray, you’ll need to double-check the plain paper sizes.

Review of the HP Envy Inspire printer 7955e: Print Speed

Our five-page text document was printed in 32.2 seconds, or 9.3 pages per minute, by HP Envy. This was faster than the 9.1 ppm average. Graphics printing was also faster than usual. In 1 minute and 41 seconds, or 3.6 pages per minute, the HP Envy printed our six-page PDF with color graphics and text. This was much faster than the national average of 2.7 ppm.

It was also simple to print our color PDF on both sides. In 2 minutes and 52 seconds, or 2.1 pages per minute, the HP Envy printed the six pages on three sheets. The wait time between the two sides on this document was approximately 11 seconds. In comparison, the Canon Pixma G6020 (which uses ink tanks) produced the same print at 1.8 pages per minute.

The Envy Inspire 7955e printed photos quickly as well. It took 2 minutes and 49 seconds to print our landscape photo on letter-size paper. This was a significant improvement over the average of 4 minutes and 20 seconds.

Conclusion

For a reasonable price, the HP Envy Inspire printer 7955e offers lots of features and excellent performance. The photo paper tray, automatic document feeder, and duplexer make this all-in-one a useful tool for both home and office use.

You don’t have to sacrifice quality for speed with fast printing and copying, as well as high image quality across the board. The oversized chassis, on the other hand, may not fit in tight spaces.

In order to keep ink costs down, you’ll need to sign up for an ink subscription plan. Some features (such as printing PDFs) are only available within the HP ecosystem, and others require an online account. If you think of this online-dependent, network-centric approach as a convenience rather than a limitation, the Inspire 7955e is likely to meet your needs.
